The e-commerce retailer announced that digital voice assistant Alexa can be used for everything from reading tweets, helping you with your travel plans and even sending you recipes from the Food Network. Roughly a year ago, Amazon opened up the Alexa engine that powers the Echo to developers. Priced at only $49.99, the Echo Dot works the same way as the original Echo introduced way back in 2014.

The Echo Dot is a lot smaller than a full-sized Amazon Echo and doesn’t have the fancy speaker system. It’s available for pre-order at www.amazon.com/echodot and will be shipping in the coming weeks in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany.

The Amazon Echo is highly anticipated in the United Kingdom considering the hype surrounding the device.

It follows the news that Amazon is also bringing the full-sized Echo speaker to the United Kingdom too. Plus, with its small built-in speaker, you can place Echo Dot in the bedroom and use it as a smart alarm clock, or in any room as a voice assistant to control smart home devices, and more. You can set reminders, make inquiries, play music and even order a product from Amazon. You can also order food through Just Eat, or ask for news snippets from Sky.

Amazon also said it will be selling the Echo Dot in six and 12 packs, including one free Dot in the six-pack and two in the 12-pack. Amazon Echo “is a hands-free speaker you control with your voice”. The new version allows also users to connect it to larger speakers.

News of the cheaper Echo Dot isn’t too much of a surprise.

Earlier in August, rumors started making the rounds that Amazon was working on a music streaming service that costs $4 or $5 per month.
