Although those of us in the United Kingdom already benefit from a standalone Amazon Prime Video subscription, those in the USA have always had to pay the full annual plan in order to watch Amazon’s exclusive content, that is, until now.

If you pay for an annual membership with Amazon Prime, you’re paying $99 a year – or $8.25 a month.

The Seattle-based e-commerce giant * a href=”https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DBYBNEE?_encoding=UTF8&*Version*=1&*entries*=0″ target=”_blank” *has unveiled two monthly subscription plans in a bid to lure more subscribers, particularly those who now subscribe to Netflix.

While it has been very successful, some consumers have resisted Amazon Prime because of the $99 up-front cost for an annual membership. Some 75 million people pay roughly $10 a month to stream movies and TV shows like “House of Cards”.

Disclosure: Jeff Bezos is an investor in Business Insider through hispersonal investment company Bezos Expeditions.

Offerings: Movies and past seasons of TV shows, such as “The Sopranos” and “Downton Abbey.’ Original programs include ‘Transparent, ‘ “Mozart in the Jungle” and ‘Catastrophe'”. That equates to $131.88 per year and is $32.88 more expensive than the yearly Prime subscription.

The Chronicle reached out to both Amazon and Netflix for comment, however were unable to get a response from either company.

And in that world, Prime Video isn’t a dark horse “Netflix killer”, it’s just one more channel of content. For all of Netflix’ strengths though they still lack an offline viewing feature for subscribers which is something that users can get elsewhere. For those who just want the company’s Prime Video offerings, the monthly charge is $8.99, which is $1 less than Netflix’s recent rate hike.

It has nabbed rights to popular series such as “Downton Abbey” and “Mr Robot”, which are not available to stream on Netflix.
