Amazon Raises Bar for Non-Prime Free Shipping

And if you order $25 worth of books as part of a total order, the whole order ships free.

Amazon has quietly upped the amount that you’ll have to spend to get free standard shipping on your orders.

Recently a survey showed that Amazon shipping has gotten slower for non-Prime members. That minimum purchase amount was previously $35 and has now been changed to $49. Free shipping for non-Prime members on qualifying orders still takes five to eight business days.

For retailers who sell sub $45 products on Amazon it makes Fulfilment by Amazon (FBA) somewhat less attractive.

It’s been 10 months since Amazon raised the free shipping order value in the UK.

In case it hasn’t been clear by now (it has), Amazon’s primary objective when it comes to everyday users, is to get them to become Prime members, which gives them access to free two-day shipping.

Good for Amazon, but potentially more challenging for non-FBA merchants – unless it works by encouraging shoppers to buy more. However you may self fulfil and offer free shipping even if your item is below $45. Now, you’ll need to spend at least $49 to have that option. Target’s free-shipping threshold now sits at $25, while e-commerce startup Jet.com offers free delivery on orders of $35.
