Amazon rolls out monthly subscriptions for Prime and Prime Video

The price will be $10.99 a month, and consumers will be allowed to turn on or off the service for specific months. But, now that Prime Video has grown up with a healthy catalogue of movies, TV shows and original programs, Amazon appears to have felt it was time Prime Video could stand up on its own. Amazon also announced on Sunday that its $99 a year Prime service, which offers free two-day delivery on Amazon purchases along with unlimited streaming of movies and television shows, will also be offered on a monthly basis to all USA consumers.

A yearly subscription of Prime costs $99, which includes full access to Prime Video.

Amazon Prime is going monthly and taking even more direct aim at Netflix.

Of particular interest Patcher also believes that the timing of the announcement wasn’t accidental either, as it comes just before Netflix increases its membership fees to $9.99 per month. Opting for the monthly route will set you back $131.88 over the course of a year, or 25% more than the annual subscription fee.

The CNN report also mentioned the monthly prices make it easier to compete with Netflix, and that makes sense by making Amazon Prime Video available without the rest of the perks of Prime. The appeal of the monthly subscription, Amazon believes, will be the idea of not being tied in for a whole year to the service.

As for the timing, Amazon perhaps can’t but make a move now. Traditional networks and service providers have seen the signs and have started to appeal to cord-cutters rather than lose them in the Internet shuffle.
