Amazon’s Next Kindle May Be Called the Kindle Oasis

There’s no word yet on when this new Kindle, dubbed the Amazon Oasis, will be available for purchase, but some leakers are saying it could happen as soon as later this week.

Also absent from the Tmall listing was a price for the Kindle Oasis, but with the current top-of-the-line device from Amazon, the Kindle Voyage, priced at $199, the new model is likely to have a price tag at least as big as this.

The leak should be taken with a grain of salt, it does line up with some of the earlier reports. No sign of a solar case for now. With slimmer bezels, a smaller battery and a one-handed design, the Kindle Oasis only weighs 131 grams compared to 180 grams for the Kindle Voyage (27 percent lighter) and 205g for the Kindle Paperwhite (36 percent lighter).

A side view of the new Kindle Oasis. A built-in accelerometer automatically pivots the display if you switch from the left hand to the right hand. Or maybe you just want the back of the Kindle to be flat? At first glance, the Oasis looks a bit ungainly with its asymmetric design – at its thinnest point, the Oasis measures 3.4 mm which expands to 3.4 millimeters at its thickest point.

From images posted to Reddit, the Oasis looks to have a larger bezel on one side, which contain the buttons for going forward and backward, but a thinner bezel on the other three sides.

That said, Liliputing has claimed Amazon will offer a leather case with a built-in battery for several extra months of battery life (it’s included and comes in the colours black, brown, and red).

Other details of the device like its cost and release dates are not clear, as of yet. Kindles have never needed one before because they get such fantastic battery life.
