Amazon takes on AirPlay and Google Cast with its new Fling tool
With this SDK, developers will be able to bring applications onto Amazon Fire TV through smartphone and tablet applications, essentially making the television screen a second display all while following the trend of streaming content. You can easily convert existing casting app to fling content to Amazon Fire TV.

Amazon has today announced the launch of a new streaming technology in the form of that Amazon Fling that will compete with the likes of Google’s Chromecast. The Amazon Fling SDK allows sending video, audio and images from iOS and Android mobile apps to Amazon Fire TV. The company recently released developer tools that will allow app makers to build support into their apps for sharing content direct from a mobile device to the Amazon Fire TV. Customers can start the experience from mobile and then later control the playback with both your app and their Amazon Fire TV remote – whichever is most convenient. Mirroring will likely play a bigger role with the Fire TV as well whereas the past only specific devices were compatible, more notably the handsets running Fire OS and Android devices through Motorola, LG, and Google. The app developer, Red Karaoke, uses the SDK to send the audio from the phone to the TV. Developers can also leverage two-way communication between Amazon’s media streamer and mobile apps to create multi-screen experiences. Meanwhile, for iOS and Android users, Amazon Fire TV has supported standards like DIAL, which allows for flinging from services like YouTube, Spotify and Netflix.
Amazon also pointed out how simple it would be for devs already using Google Cast to add Fling compatibility to their apps. Amazon points to a couple examples, one of which is a karaoke app, while the other is an app for personalized Internet radio.
