Amazon to celebrate 20th birthday with Prime Day sale

Next week, on the eve of its 20th birthday, ecommerce giant Amazon is introducing Prime Day: a global shopping event promising to offer more deals than the legendary Black Friday event it started 90 years ago. The summer sale will be held Wednesday, July 15 – the day before Amazon.com first launched two decades prior – with special deals rolling out as often as every 10 minutes throughout the day.

From midnight on Prime Day, shoppers will see thousands of limited-time Lightning Deals, six “deals of the day” and will receive unlimited fast and free delivery.

The company seems to be on a never-ending growth trajectory – Amazon employs more than 165,000 workers worldwide and previous year brought in almost $89 billion in revenue.

Amazon’s Prime Day will also feature a photo contest to pair with Prime Photo, a relatively new photo-storage service. The company last month expanded its same day rapid delivery service called Prime Now outside the USA.

Amazon is commemorating the anniversary with a massive sale involving one of its most successful businesses – Amazon Prime.

Amazon hasn’t said if Prime Day will become an annual event, saying it is “excited to get feedback from our Prime members”.

Prime Day serves as yet another example of Amazon’s long-term effort to bring more customers to Prime, which was introduced in 2005 and now has an estimated 40 million USA members. View the full release here: http://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20150705005046/en/ .

“Prime and we will keep making it better”, said Amazon’s vice president for Prime Greg Greeley. Photos will be selected and featured daily on Amazon’s social channels leading up to Prime Day. For more information, visit amazon.ca/primeday.
