UPDATE 9:38 a.m.: From our news partner 13WHAM – Monroe County Sheriff’s Deputies said a member of a Bergen ambulance crew was killed after the ambulance rear-ended a backhoe. Their injuries were minor, Inzana said.
The male driver and a female crew member riding in the back weren’t injured but were taken to the same hospital as a precaution.
The crew member who died was riding in the front passenger seat; he was pronounced dead at United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia.
The name of the Bergen Volunteer Fire Department member has not been released pending notification of next of kin. The operator of the backhoe was also not injured.
Czudak told deputies he slowed the ambulance because of the sun glare and patches of fog in the area.
A portion of Bovee Road was shut down following the accident, but has since been re-opened.
“They did not have a patient, as they were responding to a call”, Helfer said.
