Ameer Abdullah has shown flashes, but has had fumbling issues.
The debut of Lions rookie running back Ameer Abdullah was impressive: In Week One against the Chargers, Abdullah ran for a touchdown on his first carry and finished the game with 50 rushing yards and 44 receiving yards.
One of Jim Bob Cooter’s first challenges as offensive coordinator and brand-new play-caller? Cooter said his role will grow.
Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson (81) and quarterback Matthew Stafford (9) run onto the field with their team before the game against the Arizona Cardinals at Ford Field.
Cooter said he won’t be making any changes to the Lions’ offensive line this week, but he does want to get all of his running backs more involved on offense. “I’d like to get him the ball, I’d like to get all of our guys the ball”.
Asked what role he expected to play under Cooter, Abdullah offered no clues, saying: “I guess we’ll find out, huh?” It could be a whos got who situation, could be a just blocking guys situation, could be a little bit of a schematic thing that we have to fix, so something thats really important, Cooter said.
“Bye weeks are always good for that type of thing”, he said. “We certainly did everything in our power to use that to our advantage, make sure we were working on what we wanted to work on”.
“Give me a few time, and three or four players, and I think we’re going to be a very good football team”, said Fontes upon being hired.
Adjusting to headset cords and sideline technology is just one change Cooter has had to make since stepping up into the open offensive coordinator position with the Lions.

“We need to do a lot of things better”, Cooter said. I don’t think that’s fair to the players, ” he added. In the past, (we) inconsistently moved the ball in the passing game. “And there’s a few things that I don’t feel comfortable about”.
