Much of Clinton’s address to Democrats gathered in Philadelphia for their party’s convention was focused on perhaps her biggest weakness come November – a tough public image forged over decades of withering political trench warfare.

President Barack Obama hugs Hillary Clinton, the 2016 Democratic presidential nominee, onstage during the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia on July 27, 2016.

“When any barrier falls in America, it clears the way for everyone”, she said of being the first female presidential nominee for a major party.

The Clinton campaign spent some of Wednesday pouring water on damaging comments made by Virginia Governor and friend of the Clintons, Terry McAuliffe, the night before.

And she fired off red-hot barbs at her Republican rival, who has gloomily depicted America as being mired in an acute crisis of crime, violence and other woes at home and disrespect overseas.

“Our Founders embraced the enduring truth that we are stronger together”, she said. “But we are not afraid”. Prior to speaking, she will be introduced by her daughter, Chelsea, the other keystone speaker of the night.

Singers Katy Perry and Carole King are also scheduled to perform at the event.

Shortly before Obama spoke, Democrat-turned-Republican-turned-independent Michael Bloomberg stood on the convention stage and urged voters to back Clinton, the “sane, competent person”.

Claire McCaskill told a story about Clinton contacting her when the Missouri Senator found out she had breast cancer.

Mr Trump, a 70-year-old NY businessman who has never held political office, is running just ahead of Mrs Clinton in a RealClearPolitics average of recent national opinion polls. “I ask you to carry her the same way you carried me”.

“I ask you to carry her the same way you carried me”.

Hillary Clinton needed support this week, everyone knew that. And she sure as heck doesn’t quit. “She keeps on fighting for the people who need her most”.

“Our convention is different, and so is our mission”. We will disrupt their efforts online to reach and radicalize young people in our country.

He also referenced Bill Clinton, the 42nd USA president and potential First Gentleman, saying, “There has never been a man or a woman – not me, not Bill, nobody – more qualified than Hillary Clinton to serve as President of the United States of America”.
