The title holder of the long running Fourth of July hot dog competition held at Coney Island has been unseated.

I trained hard for this, and I came prepared”, {

When asked what slowed him down, Chestnut said some of the hot dogs were “really cold and leathery”, but added “they were the same for everyone” and that it was no excuse for his loss. He ate 60 hot dogs and buns.

Stonie had defeated Chestnut in the past year in competitions featuring Twinkies, poutine, pumpkin pie and gyros. “It is exciting to get to go to New York”.

Though the record still stands, Chestnut’s winning streak came to an end yesterday thanks to last year’s runner-up Matt Stonie. “From the beginning, he came at it in a way like ‘I am going to beat Joey.’ He’s had a singular objective, and He’s executed on that”. It was reminiscent of what happened in 2007 when a young Chestnut upset Takeru Kobayashi, one of the greatest competitive eaters in history. But while the pair of San Jose, Calif., natives are friendly once excused from the table, during competition it is strictly about the dogs and buns.

Saturday morning, defending women’s champion Miki Sudo captured the women’s division with a flourish that emphasized strategy rather than condiments.

Sudo improved on her 2014 performance (34), but fell short of Thomas’ 2012 record of 45. For many years, the tradition was believed to have been started on July 4, 1916, (the same year the hot dog stand was founded), by four immigrants to prove their patriotism.

As mentioned by security guards at the event, the police dogs were not distracted from their job by the tempting aroma of grilled meat.
