Post offices across the country sell the Breast Cancer Research stamps year round, but during the month of October, they all step it up to raise awareness about the disease.
Almost one-in-eight American women will learn they have breast cancer.
The statistics are that 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, according to Dr. Michael Hecimovich, a radiologist at SAFH. There will also be a special area for breast cancer survivors to get a few pampering and a special gift bag.
She said: “Survival rates are now 95%, which means the vast majority of patients that I see can look forward to a long and healthy life as a cancer survivor”.
One explanation for the disparity is that black women historically have been less likely to get regular mammograms, so their cancers were more likely to be advanced when they were diagnosed.
“People ask why we turn the fountain pink to kickoff Breast Cancer Awareness Month”.
More than 230,000 USA women can expect a breast cancer diagnosis this year, but thanks to early diagnosis and advances in treatment, it’s far from a death sentence.
ACS offers a free screening reminder to help busy women keep in mind to schedule mammograms and breast exams.
“I’m doing very well, and hopefully, I can move forward and be in good health“, she said.
