An American Airlines spokeswoman said in a statement that the airline is working to fix technical problems.
Later, a FAA spokesman told Reuters that all domestic flights departing from Dallas-Fort Worth, Chicago O’Hare and Miami had been halted.
American flies out Newark Liberty, John F. Kennedy worldwide and LaGuardia airports, all with flights to at least one of the hubs grounded today.
The “connectivity issues” caused flight delays for only American and American Eagle flights and booking issues on AA.com, Norton said.
The outage comes at an awkward time for the world’s biggest airline as it prepares to finalise the merger of reservations systems of American and its US Airways subsidiary.
American Airlines’ information systems outage is affecting its website as well as flights.
The issue is affecting Dallas DFW, Miami and Chicago O’Hare airports.
Combining know-how techniques is a troublesome feat that has tripped up different airways, notably resulting in a number of outages at United Airlines after it merged with Continental Airlines in 2010.
Earlier this year, United Airlines experienced two computer glitches a month apart from each other that forced the carrier to ground its flights.

American sent a similar message to customers via Twitter. “Two arrival flights and 14 departure flights were delayed”.
