American League wins fourth straight All-Star Classic

Hosmer hit a solo shot off NL starter Johnny Cueto before Perez hit a two-run shot. That time came Tuesday night at the All-Star Game.

The American League won the MLB All-Star game with Eric Hosmer and Salvador Perez doing the heavy lifting, splitting the four RBIs in the 4-2 win.

Because that one swing never came, whichever team wins the National League pennant will travel to an American League park to begin the World Series. As Big Papi was leaving the field, fans gave him a standing ovation and all of his American League teammates greeted him.

This year, the Royals might not return to the World Series. Bryant ambushed a first-pitch, 96 miles per hour fastball, crushing it off the facing of the upper deck in left field for a homer. He took strike three. But a rally at the top of the eighth fizzled, and a double-play at the top of the ninth ended the game.

Yet, despite the Royals’ heroics, and the Cubs’ family get-together, Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz still was the toast of the party, playing in his final All-Star Game. A few home runs.

Hosmer sliced a second-inning homer to left field in the first All-Star at-bat of his life.

The lead was short-lived, with Hosmer and Perez going deep for a 3-1 lead in the second, sandwiched around Mookie Betts’ single.

Let’s get the “even year” thing out of the way first.

“And I was so proud of “Hos” when he hit that ball and Salvi when he hit it”, Yost said. Pitcher Noah Syndergaard, a top candidate to start the game on the mound, couldn’t play because of an arm issue.

I had most comments in the Gameday Thread, which must be a first this season. This year, the key names were baseball Royalty: Eric Hosmer and Salvador Perez. Hosmer is batting. 299 with a career best. “Then 3-2 he threw me a slider, and I’m like, ‘Are you trying to break my back?'” And while it’s true that the last seven World Series titles have gone to the club whose league secured home-field advantage by winning the All-Star Game, chalking up that stretch entirely to the series settings would be misleading: Only two of the seven went a full seven games, meaning winning teams didn’t often actually see more home games than their opponents during the series.

“There’s no way when you’re at the beach, having a beer, watching the waves, that you want to go back to the gym and go back to work”, he said.

“It was really, really hard not to put him in that final vote”, said Yost. That kind of left “Hos” out in the cold.

Fernandez admitted, “I couldn’t believe that I was actually pitching to him”.

The Detroit Tigers’ lone representative, first baseman Miguel Cabrera, went 0-for-1.

Ortiz said he will leave the game confident that the game is in “unbelievable hands” with young stars like Mike Trout, Manny Machado, Kris Bryant and Bryce Harper – referred to collectively as the “face of baseball” by Ortiz. “So that was a cool moment”. Brewer catcher Jonathon Lucroy hat a hit in the game. “But, you know, we play for a common cause and that’s home field advantage for the American League and guys buy into it”.

Of local interest, St. Louisan Max Scherzer tossed a flawless inning for the National League in the sixth. No visiting team has won the first two games since the 1999 New York Yankees, who swept Atlanta.
