American Querrey stuns Djokovic at Wimbledon

Djokovic claimed a first French Open title last month, having triumphed for a sixth time in Australia at the start of the year, and was favourite to become the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to win the first three grand slams of the year.

“He served very well, as he usually does”.

“I think going out I lost the first four games, and I think the rain delay helped me”, he said. “Well done, he overpowered me”.

The chances continued to present themselves to Djokovic and as he reached his 12th break point he finally took one, putting a forehand away from a tired-looking Querrey who had to let it go.

“I’m still happy to have the title, but I don’t own it”, Laver said to ESPN. “I managed to win four Grand Slams in a row two different seasons. I want to try to focus on that rather than on failure”, he added.

Rain had saved Djokovic on Friday when the match was halted with him trailing by two sets after being comprehensively outplayed. In the Aegon Championships final, Raonic did well for a set and a half before his head went down as Murray hit back. Querrey, 0-for-6 on break points in the set until then, converted No. 7 when Djokovic’s poor forehand volley found the net for 5-all.

Remarkably, though, Djokovic was broken as he served for the set.

Querrey sent shockwaves around the sporting world when he broke Novak Djokovic’s stranglehold on the game by knocking the world number one out in the third round on Saturday.

Among them is Roger Federer, who qualified for the fourth round with a straight sets victory over Daniel Evans and is now on the second line of 2016 Wimbledon betting with Ladbrokes at a quote of .50.

Gilbert, 54, said that Djokovic was without a doubt the best all-around player he has ever seen during all his years in tennis.

“It’s incredible, especially here at Wimbledon, the biggest tournament in the world”, Querrey said.

Novak Djokovic’s next stop will be a potential match against career rival Rafael Nadal, with the Serb skipping Davis Cup after a shocking exit at Wimbledon. “You got to deal with that”. But a lot of credit to Querrey, he won the match.’ Then Lopez gave his thoughts on the players, who could win more of the Slams.

“I’m really excited. It’s an unbelievable win”, Querrey said in a postmatch interview before heading off to play doubles. “It’s actually special that they are playing tomorrow because it’s like a tradition here in Wimbledon”. I don’t know what his situation was health-wise, but it didn’t look like he was ready to play a big match.

Querrey will be joined in the fourth round by countryman Steve Johnson.

In other action, fifth-seeded Kei Nishikori also reached the fourth round – equaling his best performance at the All England Club – with a quick 7-5, 6-3, 7-5 win over Andrey Kuznetsov of Russian Federation. The Czech, who was champion in 2011 and 2014, committed 43 unforced errors against Makarova, who will face Barbora Strycova for a place in the last-16.

The 10th-seeded Czech was forced to finish his fourth-round match against Jiri Vesely on Tuesday because play was suspended by darkness the night before. Their fourth-round match will be their first on grass.
