American Sam Querrey stuns No. 1 Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon

Trailing by two sets when play was suspended on Friday, Djokovic came out Saturday with a sense of determination and raced out to a quick 4-0 lead in the third set. He was asked about the rain – which delayed this match three times – playing on Court One instead of Centre and his general demeanour. “I managed to win four Grand Slams in a row – two different seasons, though”.

“Fortunately I played a good second serve and he missed the forehand wide”.

“It was exciting for me, it was exciting for everyone else”, Querrey said of beating Djokovic, and then Mahut.

After rain delays forced organizers to schedule matches on the middle Sunday for only the fourth time in history, the tournament is back on track going into the second week.

Djokovic’s loss cranks up the pressure on Murray to win a second Wimbledon title, and the 29-year-old believes Lendl, who he reunited with after Roland Garros, is the ideal calming influence as he seeks another success at SW19. What he’s done in the last 12 to 18 months, I don’t think we’ll see for a long, long time. Obviously I’m going to feel better on the Centre Court.

Sam Querrey was once such a loser in love that he jokingly turned to American TV reality show Millionaire Matchmaker to help him find the girl of his dreams.

“I think a lot of people in the locker room now believe they can win it”.

“I’m not going to lie”.

The 28th seed boomed down 31 aces and repelled an attempted Djokovic comeback to win a third-round match that began the previous evening 7-6 (6) 6-1 3-6 7-6 (5). Let’s get serious. That’s not what I do. After the American made headlines by beating No. 1-ranked Novak Djokovic on Saturday at Wimbledon, Querrey also furthered the cause of July 4th national pride by being the first US male player to advance to the Wimbledon quarters since 2011.

“It’s been a little bit tricky”.

He said: “It’s definitely the biggest win I’ve ever had”.

On Wednesday he plays Canadian sixth seed Milos Raonic – coached by USA tennis legend John McEnroe.

Novak Djokovic is fallible after all, as American powerhouse Sam Querrey proved in stunning fashion to stop the Serb’s seemingly unstoppable charge towards a Calendar Grand Slam at a rain-hit Wimbledon on Saturday.

“Everyone was happy for me and gave me some type of high five or congratulations”.

Rod Laver had hoped to pass on the Grand Slam mantle to Novak Djokovic. “I would have liked to have been at the US Open and be the first to shake Djokovic’s hand if he did it. Don Budge did that for me in 1962 at Forest Hills”.

Querrey’s Wimbledon run has given a shot in the arm to American men’s tennis, which has weakened substantially since the days of Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi in the 1990s and early 2000s.

Andy Murray insisted Novak Djokovic’s shock Wimbledon exit does not pile extra pressure on him.

“He broke a number of records, winning all four slams, 30 consecutive grand slam matches”.

“You’ve got Nick Kyrgios, who’s beaten Rafa on Centre Court before; Feliciano Lopez, who’s a very good grass-courter; Tsonga is one of the best grass-court players in the world; not many players want to play John Isner; Richard Gasquet’s still in there and he made the semis past year”.
