American witnesses describe deadly attack in France

The Copeland family vacation started in Pamplona, Spain, moved to Barcelona and ended tragically as the Bastille Day fireworks faded over Nice, France.

Tragedy struck overseas and at home on Thursday after the community of Lakeway, Texas found out that they had lost two of their own in the Nice, France attacks. Austin turned 22 last week; Kim Copeland’s 40th birthday is Monday.

Brodie Copeland was a fifth-grader at Lakeway Elementary and an avid baseball fan.

Posts on social media accounts owned by what appeared to be relatives confirmed the deaths of Sean Copeland and his son. “Rest in peace, Brodie and Sean; you will be remembered by many”. The post includes a photo of Brodie swimming in the French Rivera on the day of the attack. They were together, in a group of people, when Sean and Brodie were killed, KEYETV said.

Sean, 51, worked for Lexmark Corporation as a vice president and his son Brodie, 11, liked to play youth baseball.

“His parents are going to have to tell him”, Paiz said.

“It’s devastating”, he said.

Cable spent a week with the Copeland family at a baseball tournament in Florida before they left for the European trip.

Serfoss said Brodie would often bring to school short movies he had created to share with the class – it was one of Brodie’s many talents. He was a promising baseball player and the Copelands were very involved in our program. He wanted to be an actor or a comedian when he grew up, family friends said. Tragedy tore at the family getaway Thursday night when a driver sped his truck through crowds at the seaside gathering, killing more than 80 and injuring more than 50. A truck hauled away abandoned baby strollers.

He said Sean Copeland was an enthusiastic father who made time to make sure Brodie got baseball training. “When they return home they will be wrapped up, they will be well loved, well fed, well covered, most importantly well prayed over”, he said.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said in a statement that every attack is tragic but “this latest one hits close to home”.
