Americans Can Have Cell Phone Roaming in Cuba

Starting next week, Verizon Wireless customers who travel internationally can connect easily – including talk, messaging and data – while in the Caribbean’s largest nation, through the company’s Pay-As-You-Go worldwide Travel option. “By offering worldwide services while traveling in Cuba, we are making it simple and easy for our customers to stay connected wherever and whenever they choose”.

Verizon Communications Inc. announced on September .

In a Thursday announcement, bigwig United States wireless carrier Verizon revealed that it will start offering roaming wireless service in Cuba from next week.

This expansion of mobile communications service comes in the wake of a historic shift in political and economic relations between the United States and Cuba.

Verizon’s new scheme, on the other hand, encourages its subscribers in the United States to go and explore Cuba for themselves. In its new diplomatic relationship with Cuba, the U.S. has set “connectivity” as one of its top priorities. At the moment, visiting Americans must buy a pay-as-you-go cell phone through the state telephone company, Empresa de Telecomunicaciones de Cuba SA to have cellular service or have a cell phone account in a third country.

Cuba is just the latest dot to be added to Verizon’s growing list of roaming territories, now spanning more than 225 countries. But, we would suggest that you might want to find another option if you’re planning a trip, because Verizon will be charging $2.99 per minute for calls and $2.05 per megabyte of data.
