Authorities continued curfew and restrictions in Kashmir Valley on Wednesday for the 33rd consecutive day as separatists did not relent on shutdown and protests.

A 17 year old youth, Amir Bashir Lone, of Sedow Shopian from south Kashmir’s Shopian district died at SKIMS on Monday morning, taking the death toll to 58 including that of two policemen.

Curfew remains in force in six police station areas of Srinagar – Nowhatta, Khanyar, Rainawari, Safakadal, Maharajgunj and Batamaloo – today as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order, the official said.

“Restrictions on assembly of four or more people continue to remain in effect in rest of the Valley”, the official said.

Referring to efforts of police to end the violent protests, he said more than 1,000 accused have been arrested and “bound down in different police stations of the Valley”.

“Similar restrictions shall remain in force in Sopore, Kupwara, Handwara and Baramulla towns”. However, a police spokesman denied it.

The official said the situation across the valley has showed signs of improvement since Monday as army personnel were helping police and paramilitary forces at many places to keep troublemakers away from roads.

Schools, colleges, business establishments, petrol pumps and private offices remained closed while public transport remained off the roads. One person was killed and several others injured in security forces action during fresh clashes with protestors in Chadoora area of Budgam district today.

The separatist camp has extended the shutdown call in Kashmir till August 12.

“Except for three incidents of stone pelting by miscreants on police at Awantipora in Pulwama, Lalpora in Kupwara and Ajas in Bandipora, the overall situation in the valley remained under control”, a police statement said.
