Amid tighter race, Clinton and Trump trade barbs over health

Clinton was campaigning Thursday in Greensboro, North Carolina, and speaking to a Hispanic group in Washington. “I don’t know”, Trump mused. “I tried to power through it, but even I had to admit that even a few days of rest would do me good”.

Jennifer Palmieri, Clinton’s communications director, said the candidate’s break from the campaign trail helped her “sharpen the final argument she will present to voters in these closing weeks”. She noted that many families aren’t able to take paid time off in the event of sickness. Clinton’s top aides believe North Carolina may be more solidly blue than typical bellwethers like OH because of the abundance of African-American and college-educated white voters.

After a video emerged of her stumbling and being held up by aides, the campaign revealed she had been diagnosed with pneumonia days earlier.

CNN’s Jake Tapper noticed the change as well, noting, “You can hear the subtle message there from her campaign”.

Her campaign manager, Robby Mook, said in a statement that Trump’s “Doctor Oz charade is as completely unserious as his original joke of a letter written in five minutes”. “Plans that will make a difference in people’s lives”.

Mrs Clinton will attend a rally in North Carolina and speak at a dinner in Washington after resting at her home in NY for three days following a pneumonia diagnosis and falling ill at a 9/11 memorial ceremony on Sunday.

In a move to jump-start momentum, Clinton’s campaign announced on Thursday that US Senators Elizabeth Warren of MA and Bernie Sanders of Vermont will campaign for her on Saturday in the battleground state of Ohio. Clinton released information from her doctor more than a year ago and provided updated information Wednesday following her pneumonia diagnosis.

“I’ve been in politics for many years”. Tim Kaine (Virginia), about the diagnosis.

“Like a lot of women, I have a tendency to over-prepare”.

“I can’t stand another Clinton in the White House”, she added.

“We’re offering ideas, not insults”, she said in a jab at her Republican rival.

Trump has a cholesterol level of 169, while Clinton had a total level of 189. One man wore a shirt that read, “I am deplorable”, a reference to Clinton’s controversial comments last week that “half” of Trump’s supporters could fit in a “basket of deplorables”.

The candidate’s remarks in Greensboro were overshadowed somewhat by Trump’s release of medical information showing overall good health despite excess weight and a cholesterol problem treated with drugs.

Clinton campaigned last week in Charlotte – part of what’s become a weekly routine of Clinton, Republican nominee Donald Trump or their running mates visiting the battleground state.

Thursday’s speech in an important swing state was the second of four planned before the first presidential debate on September 26 that attempt to reframe Clinton’s policies and emphasize her biography to change some of the political conversation.

She called the time away at her home in Chappaqua, New York “a gift” which had allowed her to reflect on the campaign. “I’m doing great, thank you very much”.

But she said she was eagerly awaiting the return of another CBS drama: “Madam Secretary, however, is coming back”, she said of the show in which Tea Leoni plays a swashbuckling secretary of state.

Powell had written that Clinton spoils anything she touches with “hubris”, and complained that she was blaming him for setting a precedent of using a private email account while in government. “I’m not going to start discussing someone else’s private emails”. “I spent time with our very sweet dogs”.

The choice of North Carolina for her return campaign appearance was intentional, campaign officials said, created to send the message that they still believe they are on offense in a race that has tightened in recent days.
