Amid violence and hunger, South Sudan marks 4th birthday

On Wednesday, President Kiir began a new three-year term in office after lawmakers voted to extend his rule. It represents a unique opportunity for Obama to engage fellow heads of state on one of the most pressing issues in the region, South Sudan.

The leader of South Sudan’s rebels has said the country’s civil war will continue as long as President Salva Kiir remains in power.

It has continued ever since, with the rival leaders stoking ethnic tensions for political gain, spurning regional efforts to broker peace and ignoring threats of worldwide sanctions.

At current oil prices of $60-65/bbl, South Sudan is earning around $100 million in profit per month from oil exports, approximately 90% of the government’s income.

And pressure must be exerted on external actors to cease providing direct support – in the form of financing, military and logistical assistance, and munitions – to the two conflicting parties.
