He assured that government will provide all possible support, so that the goalof eradication of Hepatitis-B would be achieved.
While lauding the role of the film icon Amitabh Bachchan in giving a push to hepatitis-B awareness programme, he said that for health issues, support of the society is quite important and Amitabh Bachchan’s contribution had added power to the campaign. The actor launched a Hepatitis awareness campaign in Mumbai on November 23. Talking about how he contracted the disease, the “Paa” star revealed that he had been injected with nearly 60 bottles of blood from close to 200 donors and one of them was carrying Hepatitis B virus. “I continued to function normally till 2000 and nearly 18 years after the accident, during a very normal medical check up, I was told that my liver was infected and I had lost 75 per cent of my liver”. So, if I am standing here today, you are looking at a person who is surving with 25 per cent of liver. That is the bad part. The good part is you can survive even with 12 percent. “But no one wants to get to that”, he said.
The drive aims to create awareness about hepatitis-B and its vaccine through uninhibited confessions led by UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Amitabh Bachchan. Despite having the means to go overseas, all his treatments during all ailments have been done here itself.
