Amnesty International said Monday that it has evidence that a USA -made bomb was used in a strike by the Saudi Arabia-led coalition that hit a Doctors Without Borders hospital last month, killing 19 people.
In November 2015 the US State Department approved an arms transfer worth $1.29 billion to Saudi Arabia, which includes the transfer of general objective bombs from the Mark / MK89 series, despite the fact that Amnesty International has documented their use in unlawful air strikes that have killed scores of civilians.
A leading human rights group says it has confirmed a USA -made bomb was used in a Saudi-led airstrike in Yemen that struck a hospital.
The attack was the fourth over the last 10 months on an MSF facility in Yemen, and led the organization to close its hospitals in the north of the country.
“The flight on board of a UN private aircraft has been canceled due to the refusal by [president Saleh’s] General People’s Congress party and Ansarullah to sign the document stating that the United Nations does not bear responsibility [for the flight’s safety]”, the source said.
The war pits the ousted President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, who is supported by a Saudi Arabia-led coalition, against Iran-allied Houthi rebels and supporters of former President Ali Abdullah Saleh.
Saudi Arabia is a “frenemy” of the United States, and we should not be selling the Middle Eastern country arms, Sen. Bombing by the US -backed coalition, comprising nine Arab nations, has pushed the Houthis out of southern Yemen but they still control the capital, Sanaa, which they seized in 2014.
Murphy said in the briefing this morning that they expected a bipartisan group of senators would vote in favor of the resolution to stop the arms sale and hopes this will “send a loud signal both to this administration and the Saudis that the conduct of the war inside Yemen has to change”.
Earlier this month, a Yemeni minister said that Egypt is hosting an global conference in March to raise humanitarian aid for Yemen.
