However, a Dutch police spokeswoman said the confused man yelled “Bomb!” while on the bus. The bus was brought to a stand still near the Nieuw-Sloten off ramp, passengers were evacuated and the man was arrested.

The bus driver had put the bus on the side of the highway, after which the passengers got out of the bus and the suspect was arrested.

Examination of the bus did not disclose any unsafe material.

Dutch police have been conducting vehicle searches near Schiphol airport, one of Europe’s largest, since last week.

Checks on vehicles entering the complex have led to tailbacks, local TV reported.

The municipality of Haarlemmermeer, in which Airport Schiphol is located, stepped up security measures in consultation with the Dutch National Coordinator for Security and Counterterrorism (NCTV).

“The extended security (measures) will remain in place for the time being”, a statement by local authorities said.

The move was linked to the national threat level, according to a statement issued by the municipality in which the airport lies. “Measures, visible and invisible, are being taken”.
