Amy Schumer: ‘I Am Expecting A Backlash’ For Supporting Gun Control

The topic became personal for Schumer last month when 59-year-old Russell Houser allegedly shot and killed two people before turning the gun on himself during a showing of Schumer’s new movie “Trainwreck” in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Amy Schumer usually tries to make us laugh, but is now tackling something very serious by using her fame to assist an influential relative’s efforts to curb gun violence.

During the press conference, Amy Schumer refused to utter the name of the Alabama drifter who pulled the trigger, killing Mayci Breaux and Jillian Johnson. “Preventing risky people from getting guns is very possible, we have common sense solutions”.

Senator Schumer told the press conference he hoped that having his actress cousin by his side would bring increased attention to the problem.

The legislation, proposed by the Democratic senator from New York, will reward states that report comprehensive information on background check records for gun purchases and registration, while punishing states that do not adhere to the reform.

The pair announced a new public iniative to tackle gun violence. Schumer will also be calling on Congress to “preserve mental health funding and substance abuse programs”.

Following the tragedy, Schumer expressed her condolences on Twitter and subsequently vowed to use her celebrity status to advocate for gun control as fans reached out to her and urged her get involved in the debate.

She visited the show to intense applause, talking about her movie and her changes since the shooting.
