Schumer, 35, described her first sexual experience at 17 as “not a good one”, adding that she only realised how problematic it was when she read through diary entries from when she was younger.

Schumer choosing to share her experiences now is an important testimony to the fact there is no set timeline for healing and coping processes when it comes to sexual assault. I didn’t think about it until I started reading my journal again. “When it happened, I wrote about it nearly like a throwaway”, she says. He was saying, “I’m so sorry” and “I can’t believe I did this”.

Schumer’s story is a sad one, and it must have taken her so much courage to talk about it.

“Every time we say good-bye, I think, This will have been a nice last week together”. Although Schumer didn’t specifically identify herself as a victim, she alluded to our culture of victim-blaming.

“You know, with the rape survivor, it’s not just shaming, it’s fury”, she said. “You want to f-ing cry and scream”, she said. “Sophomore year, I went from having had sex with two guys to, all of the sudden, you’re up to 10”.

Schumer, who is dating 29-year-old furniture designer, Ben Hanisch, admits that getting to the point where she’s in a great relationship hasn’t been easy.

“I feel like there are fifty ways it’s my fault”.

“I feel like Ben is the first guy who’s really been my boyfriend”. “People are going to know everything about me”, she told ET about her upcoming book, revealing that the memoir will explore her “childhood, big break, family and feminism”.
