Analyzing Giancarlo Stanton’s Home Run Derby Dominance

Fernandez was among several All-Star pitchers expressing interest in participating in the Home Run Derby. He hit his 16th home run with seven seconds to spare.

His total distance in home runs hit totaled 5.1 miles. His average home run Monday traveled 446 feet. “Next year it’s at home (in Miami) so there’s a pretty good chance”. Petco Park isn’t an easy place to hit balls out, but Stanton didn’t care.

Stanton had 14 blasts of more than 440 feet in the first round.

Despite the disappointment of losing, Frazier was in awe of Stanton’s performance. And quite properly the victor also had the longest homer of the night measuring 497 feet. Building in the left-field corner and the top of the batter’s eye in center field.

“Right now, it’s hard”, Ozuna said when asked if any player had as much raw power as Stanton.

Stanton defeated Baltimore Orioles outfielder Mark Trumbo 17-14 in the semifinal round after routing former champion Robinson Cano of the Seattle Mariners 24-7 in the first round. After two injuries in the first half of the season, Stanton looked like a true All-Star despite not making the team. He is the second player in the history of the Derby to win the event without being an All-Star, joining Yoenis Cespedes in 2013. With the crowd trying to energize Myers, he did not have a great showing as he only hit 10 and did not reach the bonus. Duvall pulled all of his homers to left field and made quick work of Myers. Frazier had plenty of time still remaining when he bettered the Gonzalez 11. The Fish’s offense ranks 22nd in all of baseball in runs scored, having hit only 77 long balls on the season (third fewest in MLB).

The Marlins, now six games back of the Nationals in the NL East and tied with the Mets for the second Wild Card spot, could certainly use his help. 20 of those 61 came in the final where he ousted Frazier, winning 20-13 at Petco Park in San Diego.

“With him, I had to wait until the clock hit zero [to know if he was beaten] because he had that comeback previous year and he knows the format more than any of us”. The advantage of going first though is that it puts pressure on the opponent.

Trumbo needed 18 to move on to the finals. Stanton wasn’t a surprise since he hits balls out of the ballpark during the season.
