President Muhammadu Buhari’s office said “tens of people” who had been looking forward to their Christmas celebrations had been killed, without giving a precise toll.
Local media reported higher death tolls, but the Red Cross team counted four bodies when it arrived.
According to the statement, the chairman said the explosion, which occurred in an industrial gas plant in Nnewi, was tragic and regrettable.
A witness told the Vanguard newspaper that the blast was triggered when a truck began discharging cooking gas without waiting for the mandatory cooling time.
The former Vice President praises the late Lamido’s mother for the enviable and spectacular role she played in the life of the Lamido and in the life of the people of the people of Adamawa all through the period of her eventful life.
The Anambra command said that eight people died in the explosion, describing as false, the “alarming and misleading figure” of over100.
Many bodies were charred beyond recognition, and dozens of survivors were hospitalized with severe burns. “Many people were killed and a lot of them were those that had been in the station queuing all day to get their cylinders refilled”.
The Chicason Group, which owns the plant where the explosion occurred, produces vegetable oil, motor spare parts and other products.
