And a win by Louie Anderson – kick off Emmys
“Game of Thrones” and “Veep” may have taken hom the top prizes – for best drama and comedy series, respectively – but racial diversity was proudly on display across several categories Sunday night for the 68th annual Primetime Emmy Awards, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.

It started with a filmed piece tracking him as he hitched his way to Los Angeles’ Microsoft Theater, catching rides – or trying to – with such TV faves at the “Modern Family” cast, “Late Late Show” host James Corden (who imposed on him a carpool karaoke session), “Game of Thrones'” khaleesi Emilia Clarke aloft on one of her dragons, and the presidential limo of “Veep” star Julia Louis-Dreyfus, whose driver was a big surprise: former real-life White House hopeful Jeb Bush, who reminded Kimmel he’s between jobs right now but can earn $12 an hour driving for Uber. Rami Malek of Mr. Robot delivered the first series Emmy for USA Network in his first shot, while Tatiana Maslany of BBC America’s Orphan Black finally landed the award that had eluded her.
LOS ANGELES | Fantasy epic “Game of Thrones” made television history at the 68th Emmys on Sunday, becoming the most decorated fictional show since the awards began almost seven decades ago.
In terms of politics, Kimmel’s monologue included a lighthearted crack in which he suggested deporting “The Apprentice” producer Mark Burnett (who was born in the U.K.) if Trump wins the election.
She shared the stage with actor Tom Hiddleston to give away the Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series, Movie, or Dramatic Special award to “The Night Manager director” Susanne Bier.
“I’d also like to take this opportunity to personally apologise for the current political climate”.
She promised to rebuild the wall between comedy and politics and “make Mexico pay for it”. “Our show started out as political satire, but it now feels more like sobering documentary”.
The Outstanding Comedy Actor gong went to Jeffrey Tambor, who plays a transgender woman in “Transparent”, for the second year in a row.
Jill Soloway won for directing a comedy for Amazon’s “Transparent“.
“If Trump gets elected and he builds that wall the first person we’re throwing over it is Mark Burnett”. He also made fun of the smugness of his audience: “In Hollywood, the only thing we value more than diversity is congratulating ourselves on how diverse we are”, he said.
Maslany has drawn praise for her versatility in playing the roles, which range from suburban mom to ruthless assassin, during the show’s four seasons.
The award gala also honoured Indian-origin actor-writer-director Aziz Ansari and Alan Yang, who received the Outstanding Writing for a Comedy series honour for “Master of None”.
Louie Anderson was honored as best supporting actor in a comedy series for his portrayal of a loving but tough mom in “Baskets“. It was able to hold onto the acting categories from previous year, with Saturday Night Live’s Kate McKinnon succeeding Mom’s Allison Janney in the supporting actress in a comedy series race, and American Crime’s Regina King repeating as supporting actress in a movie or miniseries.
If you’re anything like me, a 75-year-old woman stuck inside of the body of a whiny millennial, you probably care a lot about the 68th Emmy Awards. The best supporting actor honour went to Sterling K Brown at the gala night, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.
One of them, Sara Paulson, won for outstanding lead actress in a limited series.
Priyanka, who has found popularity in the United States with TV show “Quantico”, looked scintillating in a scarlet gown as she took to the red carpet and then the Emmys stage. “Thank you, Hillary Clinton”, she said, referring to two of the many characters she plays with gleeful abandon on the venerable sketch show. This is only the fourth time in Emmy history two shows from the same network won both categories, with NBC the last to accomplish it in 1983 and 1984 with Cheers and Hill Street Blues. “The Voice” was named best reality-competition program.
Actor, Drama Series: Rami Malek, “Mr. Robot“. Kimmel’s meet and greet – the peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwich handout.
MCKINNON WINS. “Saturday Night Live’s” Kate McKinnon, who grew up in Sea Cliff, won best supporting actress in a comedy series.
