Starter Kyle Gibson (5-9), who had given up one earned run in 12 2/3 innings against Chicago this season, allowed five in 5 2/3 innings on Friday.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – Byron Buxton took a curtain call following his first career grand slam and Brian Dozier hit another home run as the Minnesota Twins continued to pound the pitchers on the Chicago White Sox.
Abreu, Todd Frazier, Melky Cabrera and Anderson each finished with three hits. To have an offensive game like that, then have the guys you want in the game at the end with a chance (to win it). Pinch runner Logan Schafer scored on pinch hitter Kurt Suzuki’s double to the left-field wall, handing David Robertson his seventh blown save in 40 chances.
Buxton now has nine hits, seven runs scored, three home runs and nine RBIs in four games since his September 1 call up. Eight runs crossed the plate for the Twins, as Shields gave up a 2 run homer (#3 on his brief night) to Miguel Sano, walked the next batter, and that was it for Shields.
Minnesota starter Hector Santiago pitched six quality innings, allowing three runs on four hits and three walks to earn his first victory since being acquired in a trade from the Los Angeles Angels on August 1. Dozier, Buxton and Sano each hit home runs in the final two games of the series.
For the White Sox, who defeated the Minnesota Twins 13-11 in 12 innings Sunday, there’s no other way to put it – the surge is coming too late. He leads the majors with 21 homers since the All-Star break. “When you have two outs and you just couldn’t get (the final one)”.
Then the bullpen came in and squandered a day that should’ve been highlighted by four home runs, they second straight day the Twins sent four balls out of the park. The right-hander has allowed 30 earned runs in 39 2/3 innings over his past seven starts, including an August 17 complete game in Atlanta where Gibson allowed three earned runs.
Twins left-hander Andrew Albers was charged with five runs, three earned, and six hits in 4 2/3 innings.
White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu stole the show early in the game by posting a career-high seven RBIs in a three-hit effort. Chicago added a run in the second on Adam Eaton’s RBI ground out to make it 4-0.
Dozier’s solo blast in the fourth pushed the Twins’ lead to 7-4. The White Sox are stumbling down the stretch of their own disappointing campaign and are 1-5 on their seven-game road trip.
With one out and runners on second and third, Anderson doubled to deep left against Pat Dean (1-6). Anthony Ranaudo will start for the Sox against the Twins. Santiago threw 6 1/3 scoreless innings Monday in Cleveland after going 0-4 with a 10.89 ERA in his first four starts with the Twins.
NOTES: White Sox RHP Miguel Gonzalez, who pitched in a rehab game with Triple-A Charlotte on Thursday, is expected to rejoin the major league club next week and could pitch against Detroit.
