Instagram said it had made a “mistake” and returned the account to the non-footballing Mr Iniesta. Iniesta found that a bit unusual, and the situation only got more concerning when his Instagram presence was, without warning, replaced with another Andrés Iniesta – the professional footballer.

Instagram reinstated the rightful owner of the account soon after that, and the football player registered a different handle, @andresiniest8, which already has more than 5.4 million followers. “I am a father who likes to take pictures of his kids, yummy food, and interesting buildings”, he wrote in a recent Medium post. “The reason was that I “infringed the Terms of Use”. Five hours after posting about his experience, and despite nobody contacting him to explain why it had been taken away from him, his account was restored.
After contacting Instagram to no avail, Iniesta resorted to writing an article about the incident on Medium.
Iniesta said he didn’t think too much of it and went on enjoying his vacation, but then, his friends noticed they were being followed by a different Andres Iniesta: the soccer star and FC Barcelona captain.
“What pains me is that all of this has happened without any explanation, not even a twitter response from Instagram”.
Designer Andres Iniesta says he feels his rights were “violated”. I haven’t done anything wrong and have lost not only my pictures, but being able to share important moments with my friends and family.
