Andre Johnson to be cut by Colts, apparently wants to play again

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported last month that the veteran wide receiver will not be back with the Colts following a disappointing season in which he struggled to gain separation on routes and never developed a rapport with Andrew Luck. Those numbers were career lows for Johnson, during a season in which he played nine or more games.

Johnson is regarded as the top player in Texans franchise history and a future Hall of Fame candidate.

Johnson was a Pro Bowler seven times and first-team All-Pro twice for the Texans. Interestingly, his best receiving yards total (1,598) came in 2012, when he did not lead the National Football League, coming in a distant second to Calvin Johnson’s 1,964.

Johnson’s 14,100 receiving yards rank ninth on the NFL’s all-time list. The 34-year-old signed with the Colts after spending the rest of his career with the Houston Texans. His agent, Kennard McGuire, told the Houston Chronicle’s Aaron Wilson last week when retirement rumors were swirling that Johnson wants to keep playing and is training for next season.

Johnson was going to have a cap number of $7.5 million and by cutting him now the Colts save $5 million in cap space (with a $2.5 million cap hit).
