“It’s only practice but it feels pretty good”, he said.

IndyCar driver and rookie Spencer Pigot crashed during the third day of practice at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

“I think if you look at the number of laps the Chevrolet cars are turning, it’s not as if they’re laying down”, he commented. “I’m optimistic about our chances but the only thing that concerns me a little is that two Hondas have blown up in the last two days [Mikhail Aleshin and Ryan Hunter-Reay]”. Speeds reaching almost 229 are surprising to see early in the practice week, and Andretti really seemed to be in Fast Friday form.

For now, though, drivers are itching to get back on the track as teams prepare for the Indy 500 – especially for Hildebrand and Carpenter, who aren’t full-time drivers in the series. McAfee provided it. “I saw it as an opportunity not only to help an Indianapolis (area) kid (Daly) run in the 100th Running of the Indianapolis 500, but also as a chance to raise money for a couple of military foundations”, McAfee said during a Wednesday press conference. “We can focus on qualifying, the race, running in traffic, running alone – and that’s what we’re going through now”.

When the track was opened to general practice, all 33 drivers entered turned laps on the track.

“The auto was feeling pretty good”.

“We only did one qualifying run and we’re nowhere fully trimmed, so that’s definitely a good thing”, said Rahal, who is now fifth in points and Honda’s shining light for the second straight season.

“We’re right on schedule with what we have as our program”.

UP NEXT: A six-hour practice session is scheduled Thursday. “I’m going to hopefully hold it to the floor for four laps”.

Team Penske has collected 114 of its 181 Indy vehicle wins and nine of its 16 Indianapolis 500 victories via Ilmor-produced engines. As yet, Miller is uncertain whether that will alter the gap relative to Chevrolet.
