Android Nougat Release Date: What Features Will Google’s Official 7.0 Software Include?

Some manufacturers are better than others at pushing Android updates out the door, so it might be quite some time before the company behind your device gets to its own roll out.

Further rollouts onto other Android devices will be determined by their manufacturers and carriers, with announcements likely in the coming days. Google seems to be pushing each out one-by-one, so your best bet to get the update as early as possible is again, to join the beta. However, those going from a previous Android version to Android 7.0 will notice many changes.

Technology correspondent Rory Cellan-Jones asks one of Google’s senior engineers about the release. It’s Google’s latest and greatest mobile operating system, but it’s already being tweaked.

Multi-window view. Now you can run two apps side-by-side in a new splitscreen view, just like a big boy OS. Nougat is not, however, a major visual overhaul of Android.

The most hyped aspect of Nougat is screen-sharing, in which two apps can divide up the screen on your phone so you can, say, bag a Pokémon while texting.

Android 7.0 Nougat brings a ton of new features to the Android platform. Google also states this will allow “Picture-in-Picture” mode for Android TV, which is awesome.

Using a Pixel C, the system went from slightly useful in the odd occasion when it worked to unlocking the device about 80 per cent of the time. Another highlight of Android Nougat 7.0 is that it is Daydream ready. It makes some significant changes under the hood that provide benefits including longer battery life.

The quick-reply additions to notifications feel like they should have been there from the start.

Google will begin rolling out updates for a number of devices today, including the Nexus 6, Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, Nexus Player, Google Pixel C, and General Mobile 4G (Android One). The fifth and the last preview edition was released in July.

The LG V20 will be the first new smartphone that ships with Android Nougat, right out of the box. With Nougat, also, OS updates will download in the background, making it easier to stay up-to-date-a key step in keeping security strong.
