Andrzej Fonfara: I Didn’t See The Punch Coming, It Happens

The words might as well be “blah blah blah” coming out of an underdog’s mouth when he says, “I’m going to shock the world”.

“We’ve done some traveling in camp to get excellent sparring and overall it’s just been a great camp”.

Fonfara is from Chicago via Poland, so he’ll have the home-ring advantage. It is a clear favorite at the halfway point of 2016 for Upset of the Year.

Fonfara was expected to have an easy time of it awaiting an opportunity to get a rematch with title holder Adonis Stevenson, or perhaps the victor of the soon to be announced Andre Ward vs. Sergey Kovalev bout.

They’ll bill it as two main events, but everyone will be turning in for the light heavyweight match up Andrzej Fonfara (28-3, 16 KOs) takes on Joe Smith Jr. Fonfara stumbled to his feet, but never regained his composure.

He came out with fire in his eyes this time, sending a message right off the bat with a booming left hand that watered Payano’s eyes and made him teeter backwards. It seems surreal to everyone but Smith Jr. “I just need to do what I do best, and hopefully I’ll be in a world title fight next”. I know that I must win the fight. “I was just looking for the punch and it landed”. I have better technique and I’ve done my studying.

“I was courteous enough to offer the rematch right away, and I hope that I get reciprocated the same way”.

“He’s (Fonfara) fought the top fighters in the world”. Barry Hunter told me I had to take the last round and I got him cut. I won’t be finished until he stops. Somewhere at the Local 66 Union hall in Long Island a crowd of construction workers were cheering their co-worker for stepping on the robe of a prince. “I’m amped to get into the ring with a high-quality fighter like Fonfara and put on a show”. A bonus fight between fast tracked, 20 year old prospect, Erickson Lubin and Mexican Journeyman Daniel Sandoval. Lubin began the fight with exceptional body work, and then hurt Sandoval in the third round with a right hook.

“He threw a good combination and I stopped throwing punches, so the referee did what he had to do”.

“We’ve seen a couple of his fights”.

Smith looked good, but he had a guy that left himself wide open to make him look good. In a division packed with talent, Lubin is one to watch. Lubin dedicated the bout to his hometown of Orlando, Florida.

Rau’Shee Warren was already prepared for the moment the first time around, but fell short; now he just needs the referee to raise his hand at the end of the fight.

Another new WBC champion put the title belt around his waist in Chicago.

Rau’She Warren wrestled the WBA Bantamweight title with a 12-round majority decision over previously undefeated Juan Carlos Payano in a rematch of their controversial bout in August.
