“I spoke to Leon last night at the champions” dinner briefly. This is the third finals appearance for Andy Murray in his home Grand Slam overall. “What’s next for him is up to him”, said Raonic, a 25-year-old Canadian who had never before participated in a Grand Slam final.
Murray, not known for his serving prowess, was the more effective server of the two, with a higher percentage of unreturned serves (34 percent to 26 percent) and a much larger amount of first serve points won (87 percent to 67 percent).
Reflecting on the Wimbledon final, Piatti praised Murray and acknowledged his experience paid dividends but also noted that he believed Raonic had not yet realised his full potential.
“Before when I won here [for the first time in 2013], I was genuinely motivated exclusively really by the slams”, Murray said. He then stole the second frame with a 7-3 win in the thirteenth game.
Andy Murray can build on his second Wimbledon success and win more majors with coach Ivan Lendl by his side, says former Davis Cup player Jamie Baker.
Few doubt Raonic’s maturity and work ethic, although there are one or two areas of his game that still need to improve – namely his return of serve – as was shown against Murray.
“From what I saw of his matches he had a pretty good opportunity to win this tournament without losing a set”. They tiedonce more at 4-4 heading into the ninth.
Finally leaping over the odds to win, Murray achieves the ultimate joy factor.
Andy Murray proved too strong on both occasions but Raonic has marked himself out as the man most likely to join the grand slam winners club in the near future.
“It is different”, said the Scot. “I feel happier this time”. I know how hard these competitions are to win once, so do it twice means a lot.
“Novak is not just going to go away just because he has had one bad tournament”, he said. I want to spend time with my family and closest friends, the people I work with.
He returned to number two in the world rankings last October but lost a fifth Australian Open final to Djokovic and was beaten by the Serb again in early June, having reached the final at Roland Garros for the first time.

“I think when I was out there at the tight moments, in the tie-breaks and stuff, knowing I’d been in that position before, knowing how maybe he would have felt at those moments, being his first grand slam final, I do think that helped me a little bit”. “I played some really good stuff today”. The Prime Minister of the country is also here, so thanks every one for coming out, I’ll see you next year.
