Andy Murray gives Britain Davis Cup title after 79 years

The 79-year gap is the longest between titles in Davis Cup history.

“I don’t speak to any of the people who are in a high-up position about that”, Murray said.

Speaking about their post-win celebrations, Murray said: “We all stayed in the hotel and our friends and family came round, and a lot of the fans were staying in the hotel or nearby so they were in the bar area and we chatted and spent a bit of time with them, so it was really nice. We should celebrate tonight”. I think we lost to a better team. Britain last won it in 1936 with Fred Perry as its star and last played in the final in 1978. Britain last played in the final in 1978. He now has two Grand Slam titles and an Olympic gold medal to go with the Davis Cup title.

“Winning Wimbledon, you feel like you’re just doing it for yourself”.

Asked if the Davis Cup could be a springboard, he said: “I hope so”. “Nothing may ever top this, it’s definitely one of the highlights of all of our careers”.

The world number two believes the International Tennis Federation, which organises the Davis Cup, and the ATP should do more to ensure scheduling problems can be resolved.

After Murray and his teammates – Kyle Edmund, James Ward, Jamie Murray and captain Leon Smith – stormed to victory in Ghent over the weekend, the two-time Grand Slam champion criticised the LTA for failing to build on his success.

Ward was the only man other than Andy and Jamie Murray to win a rubber during this year’s remarkable Davis Cup run when he beat America’s John Isner in the first round in March. However many butchered chances during Murray’s most successful years suggest there is little hope of an immediate revolution.

McEnroe had a 12-0 record in 1982 and Michael Stich had 11 wins in 1993.

Murray had brought Britain back into contention on the opening day by beating Ruben Bemelmans in straight sets.

Goffin, ranked No. 16, had not won a set against Murray in two previous matches on the tour.

The first major target for Murray will be the Australian Open in only seven weeks’ time.

With nine sets of tennis over two days behind him, Goffin was unable to sustain the momentum and dropped his serve in the very next game.

“I can rest now, start training for Australia and give everything I’ve got there and then I get a break”.

Murray hit a service victor and an ace to come out unscathed despite facing a break point in the next game.

But the Belgian was not finished and again broke to make it 2-2.

Cameron praised the team for their “sensational win” over Belgium in Ghent on Sunday. “He played the big points better”.
