Andy Murray Into U.S. Open Quarter Finals With Straight Sets Win

Andy Murray put out a statement with a demolition job of Grigor Dimitrov, while Serena Williams continued to break records on another day of exciting action at the US Open 2016.

Murray defeated 22nd seed Grigor Dimitrov in straight sets 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 in the 4th round of the US Open to reach the quarters.

Williams will have a day off before tackling Simona Halep after the fifth-seeded Romanian’s 6-2, 7-5 victory over Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro.

A big part of the way he took control – and remained in control – was his serving.

“That would be the fastest serve I’ve hit, the other best serve was here at the US Open around 138 but I have never hit over 140”.

“Once I got up in the score, I wasn’t giving him any free points”, Murray said. The balls are fast.

“Dani and I go out for dinner”.

“Maybe if it was someone from another country, I wouldn’t feel like that”. ‘I think that was lucky. I only did it once.

“It was a very quick match, one where I played very well, got a little bit of confidence back after not playing well a couple days ago”.

That is slightly disingenuous given the vocal part Murray’s now-wife Kim played in ramping up the energy levels on court with an entertaining tirade of expletives directed in Berdych’s direction during his match against the Scot at the Australian Open nearly two years ago.

Murray was coming off a tough match against Paolo Lorenzi in the third round, where he needed four long sets to survive.

Dimitrov had no answer to Murray’s precise ground strokes which were finding the corners with pinpoint accuracy and the British No 1 added two more breaks to quicken his progress in the third.

As Williams, never seriously challenged in a 6-2, 6-3 victory over 52nd-ranked Yaroslava Shvedova, sailed on, one of the two players with a chance to topple her from the world number one spot in this tournament bowed out as fourth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska was shocked by 18-year-old Croatian Ana Konjuh. ‘I played very well. He has won 26 of his past 27 matches, including a title at Wimbledon and a second consecutive singles gold medal at the Olympics.

The second set was more competitive, but it was still clear who was the better player.

Del Potro was handed an easy passage into the last-eight when Dominic Thiem retired from their encounter midway through the second set while trailing 6-3 3-2.

The world number two, who sat out the quarter-final in Serbia in July following his Wimbledon triumph, has been named in a provisional five-man team alongside Kyle Edmund, Dan Evans, Jamie Murray and Dom Inglot. He beat Novak here (in 2014).

After saving a match point in a five-set win in his last outing, Wawrinka was cruising against 63rd-ranked Illya Marchenko, who was playing in his first Grand Slam round of 16.
