Bulgarian Dimitrov had ended Murray’s title defence at Wimbledon in 2014 and came out on top in their last meeting earlier this season in Miami but the second-seeded Scot was firing on all cylinders yesterday.
“So far I think we’ve been doing a great job”.
As for the evening’s fastest serve, which Murray said would be the first time he’s topped 140 miles per hour: “I think that was lucky”. I’ve never hit over 140 before.
“I stopped rushing in the rallies”. I wasn’t going for too much.
Following the match, Murray said that Lorenzi was an extremely good player and displayed some really good moves throughout the game. That’s the beauty of an individual sport. My best tennis is in there.
During the changeover right before the last game, it suddenly began to rain, and play was delayed only slightly before the shower passed.
“A lot of people worry about that or panic, like, “This is terrible”.
“A lot of people worry about that or panic, but you played one bad match”.
And that won’t bother Andy Murray, who has won here in high winds before and can use all his variety to combat these sorts of conditions, and he may need to, as he has a tricky test tonight.
“He’s a solid player, doesn’t give you many cheap points and I was trying to get cheap points”.
Juan Martin del Potro, the 2009 champion, became the lowest ranked player in 25 years to reach the quarter-finals.
He delivered a resounding message about his credentials to win the US Open after cruising past Grigor Dimitrov with a flawless performance in Arthur Ashe Stadium, winning 6-1 6-2 6-2.
Murray didn’t let up and soon found himself 3-0 ahead in the second set after breaking Dimitrov twice.
“It’s not maybe Kyle’s fault”.
Murray plays down the role he’s played in developing Edmund and Evans, insisting that they deserve all the credit for turning themselves into world class players. “I don’t think that will change”.
“It’s good for myself”. That’s just a good start for me.
“It was a very quick match, one where I played very well, got a little bit of confidence back after not playing well a couple days ago”. “Obviously I’m very disappointed from the result”.
“Once I got up in the score, wasn’t giving him any free points, I could sense it was getting tough for him”.
The 27-year-old is unseeded and needed a wildcard even to enter in NY after a chronic wrist injury saw him miss nine grand slams in a row and his ranking plummet.
In her first grand slam quarter-final, Pliskova will take on Konjuh.

Tomorrow, Novak Djokovic returns against Jo-Wilfred Tsonga. He has won 26 of his past 27 matches, including a title at Wimbledon and a second consecutive singles gold medal at the Olympics.
