Broady got a game on the board to enter the match but Murray was in firm control as he took a 4-1 lead.

Andy Murray may not be a superstitious man but his win over Yen-Hsun Lu could prove to be a good omen.

Lu came, the world number 76, had won 11 matches in a row on grass and he broke Murray straight away.

“Today I am enjoying other things a lot more”.

In the first all-British men’s meeting at Wimbledon since 2001 and first at a Grand Slam since 2006, Murray was in command from start to finish.

“Players are now breaking through later than they ever were before, so players are obviously finding ways to hang around”, Murray said. I know quite a bit of Fred Perry’s history.

Murray has been as captivated as anyone by the Marcus Willis story and left a message of congratulations on the 25-year-old’s phone following his victory over Ricardas Berankis. Murray has won seven straight matches on grass.

The 2014 US Open finalist looked briefly troubled when he lost the first set but turned it around. “It will certainly be a good test for me early in the event and I’ll need to perform well”.

“But my confidence is not there on my backhands yet, and that’s tough when you play against the top guys”. “I didn’t play like I was at home from the start, but I certainly felt like it. I think the longer the match went on, the more I focused on the tennis and stopped remembering where I was”.

“I didn’t know him before we played in Brisbane”, Murray told a press conference.

Day 1 of Wimbledon will be remembered for the tennis instructor still playing at the All England Club. “But I’ve got to go out and try to beat him”.

He said: “There seem to be a lot of people who I thought would be voting to stay in that are voting to leave”. “It was one of the best weeks of my life, so I’m not going to change that this time”.

“The first match is always tricky and it was pretty breezy out there at the beginning”, Murray said.

Blustery conditions on Centre Court were not making it easy for either player, with Broady struggling to time his forehand.

“But it makes absolutely zero difference to me, how I perform and how I play”. I don’t feel like I was completely overawed.

Swiss fourth seed Stan Wawrinka defeated American teenager Taylor Fritz 7-6 (4), 6-1, 6-7 (2), 6-4 to set up a second-round blockbuster against Argentine Juan Martin del Potro.

Wimbledon is set for an all-British showdown as Andy Murray takes on Liam Broady on Centre Court.

ROGER Federer was well short of his best as he advanced to the second round with an uninspired 7-6 (7/5), 7-6 (7/3), 6-3 victory over Argentina’s Guido Pella.
