Andy Murray wins Wimbledon – QA

Recently-crowned Wimbledon champion Andy Murray has set his eyes upon dethroning top rival Novak Djokovic at the numero uno position.

The 29-year-old, who became Britain’s first male Wimbledon singles champion for 77 years in 2013, is the 12th man to enjoy more than one All England Club triumph.

This was Murray’s 11th grand slam final and unlike the other ten where he faced either Federer or Djokovic, Murray was the favourite and he seemed to relish the role as he ignored the magnitude of the match to claim a successive sixth win over Raonic. It’s very special because he has had quite a few tough times since his last one actually, including the surgery and lots of changes in the team and I think he is very relieved, but this time really ecstatic as well.

The current world number two outlined his aims in his BBC Sport column as he reflected on his third Grand Slam win.

“The last 18 months he has been unbelievable, he has hardly lost any matches at all, so I know that if I want to get there I’m going to have to try to win more matches against him”.

“I played a little bit too much and by the time the US Open came around I was a bit flat and tired”.

The fiercely patriotic Murray, who led Britain to Davis Cup glory a year ago and normally plays two singles and doubles with brother Jamie, is still planning to fly out to Serbia though to support the team. But I’m going to speak to him (Leon) this afternoon. Currently, the British team nominations include Andy and brother, Jamie Murray, Kyle Edmund and Dan Evans.

As a player, Lendl – who went 8-11 in major finals – betrayed little emotion on court.

Murray said: ‘I don’t mind failing. I’m obviously happy to win again but there’s a reason I wanted Ivan back as part of my team, I feel very, very motivated and having won here again it gives me a big lift.

Murray has since stated it is unlikely that he will play in Great Britain’s Davis Cup quarter-final clash with Serbia next weekend. I wasn’t thinking about that week, maybe in Cincinnati or something like that.

“I don’t want that to be the case this time”. I need to maintain the form I’ve had the last couple of months throughout a whole season, you know, I’ve never done that in my career before. “I’ve played my best tennis under him”, Murray summarized.
