Angela Eagle launches Labour leadership challenge to Corbyn

The party said: “The only party that can win for working people is a strong and united Labour Party”. I don’t think we have ever had that many entryists, even back in the old heydays of the militants.

Cameron said on Monday that he would stand down on Wednesday, enabling May to take up the post of prime minister this week.

The ruling Conservatives are also in the midst of a leadership contest after Prime Minister David Cameron, who campaigned for Britain to stay in the European Union, announced on the morning after the referendum he would resign.

Labour had around 400,000 members in January 2016, up from 200,000 in May 2015.

Britain’s opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn insists he will fight for the Labor Party leadership and suggests he may go to court if lawmakers exclude him from the contest.

Nearly two-thirds (63 percent) of union members polled feel that Corbyn is doing badly as leader of the Labour party compared to a third (33 percent) who think he is doing well, according to a new survey by YouGov and the elections analyst Ian Warren, published Monday.

Late last month Corbyn refused to resign following a vote of no confidence among MPs. “I am not a Blairite, I am not a Brownite and I am not a Corbynista, I am my own woman”, she said, referring to previous party leaders Tony Blair, Gordon Brown and Corbyn.

The ex-shadow minister was inundated with abusive phone calls after taking on Corbyn for the leadership of the Labour party.

The event is one of a series of grassroots events created to mobilise Corbyn supporters in the run-up to the leadership election.

The union issued a statement saying Mr Corbyn must be on the ballot paper “by right”, and warning that anyone elected in a poll from which he was excluded would have “no credibility in either the party or the country”.

Corbyn is thought to have the support of Labour members, meaning that he is likely to win the leadership battle if he appears on the ballot. “And I don’t think they’ll think it’s democracy”.

However, there is a row over whether Corbyn will automatically be on the ballot paper or whether he requires the nomination of a number of MPs – which he is unlikely to get. She has said her background as a “good sensible, down-to-earth woman with Northern roots” could help her “heal” and unite the party, the Independent reports.

“We have never just been a parliamentary party or just a movement: we are both”, Eagle said.
