Angela Eagle pulls out of race for Labour leadership

I would like to reply to Councillor Green’s letter of July 14, by saying that I did vote for JC (Jeremy Corbyn, that is) and do think that he is the right person to persuade people to vote Labour at the next general election.

He shares numerous same economic policies as the Labour leader, and regularly praises his campaigning spirit, but suggests that Mr Corbyn can not win a general election.

“They had hoped to leave that meeting with the confidence to continue to support the leadership in bringing the Labour Party together from within the Shadow Cabinet”.

Calling for a “strong and united Labour Party” Ms Eagle said last night that she would back Owen Smith in the contest.

“We do need a new generation of Labour men and women to take this party forward and get us ready for government once more”.

Mr Smith has described the surge in supporters as “excellent news” – as the number of people becoming registered Labour supporters in 48 hours was greater than the entire membership of the Conservative Party.

Mr Smith said the perception that he thought there should be no further powers devolved to Cardiff Bay was an impression Plaid Cymru was “keen to build up as they were trying to drive a wedge between me and Carwyn Jones”.

This follows as many Corbyn supporters are facing issues with their application – after being forced to pay the undemocratic £25 fee in order to cast their vote.

In the interview Mr Smith said he did not know if he would have voted against the Iraq war if he had been an MP at the time of the decision.

And the Saving Labour movement, which is backing Mr Smith’s campaign, claimed the new supporters who signed up this week would be split between the rival candidates rather than being staunchly pro-Corbyn.

The Pontypridd MP, who became the sole candidate to try to topple Mr Corbyn after Angela Eagle dropped out of the race, said he had already come under attack this morning from the Corbyn camp.

Mr Smith said: “It didn’t seem very friendly, kind or gentle to me for Jeremy to threaten everybody who works for him with the sack”.

At the end of the meeting it was clear that Jeremy Corbyn would not and could not respond to their concerns with a concrete plan and commitment to unite the party.

He posted on a live Facebook feed: “We will set out some of the measures the next Labour government will take to overcome them”. I appointed him a year ago to that position.
