Enunciating the misgivings German industry continues to have about investing in India, the German ambassador in India Martin Ney said on Thursday, “German companies have very high expectations from their investments in India but they do have issues”.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj will meet German Foreign Minister Frank Walter Steinmeir and will also call on Merkel.

Merkel, who will be on a three-day official visit to India from October 4, arrives here on October 5 evening from New Delhi while Modi on October 6 morning. “Our agreements will cover all key areas of India’s development agenda-including Make in India, Skill India, Clean Ganga and Smart Cities”, Ney said. The talks were suspended earlier this year following differences between the two sides. In addition to government to government or “G2G agreements, German enterprises are expected to conclude momentous deals with Indian business partners, Ney said”.

The third IGC will seek to build on Modi’s visit to Germany in April to participate in Hannover Messe where India was the partner country.

Agreements are likely in the area of security, economy, development cooperation, clean energy, climate, infrastructure, urban mobility, innovation and skills development, Ney said.

“But industry says that they would like to see faster progress for implementation of planned investment”, he added.

The meeting between Modi and Merkel comes eight days after they met in New York on September 26 at a summit of India, Brazil, Germany and Japan (G-4 group), as all the four countries are bidding for a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council.

“That’s particularly true of Syria, where we have all known for years that there can only be a solution with Russian and not without Russia“, Merkel said at speech in eastern Germany to mark the upcoming 25th anniversary of German reunification.

Merkel will also be travelling to Bengaluru where she and Modi will be meeting business representatives including those representing technology companies along with the chiefs of German business houses.

North Rhine Westphalia is the state with the largest share in the total trade volume with India (27 percent), amounting to nearly one-fourth of the total trade between the two countries. “This visit would be an opportunity to consolidate stronger strategic, political and economic partnership between India and Germany”, the release added.
