Angelique Kerber beats Karolina Pliskova to win US Open women’s title

Her mental game was also strong. Pliskova would win only one more game.

Seemingly mentally and physically scarred by her shock semi-final loss to Roberta Vinci at the US Open, which ended her bid for a calendar Grand Slam, Williams would not serve another ball in anger for the remainder of 2015. I think she never gives up.

Trailing 3-1 in the fourth set, Djokovic was granted the unusual chance to have a medical timeout at a time other than a changeover. Kerber managed to save all three break point attempts coming from Pliskova during the forty-minute first frame. Kerber fell behind early, but held at love for 2-3 and then broke Pliskova to make it 3-all. The brand-new world No. 1 was overcome with emotion on Saturday evening after she defeated Karolina Pliskova 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 for her first US Open champinoship.

“I’m feeling much more confident now in my skin and how I am and how to walk”, Kerber, the oldest player to debut at No. 1, told Nguyen. Karolina Pliskova (RCH) 4 425.7.

Pliskova hits a new career high of sixth after her run in NY, while former number one Caroline Wozniacki is back in the top 30 at 29th after reaching the last four.

Kerber looked dominant in the first set as Pliskova-who beat both Venus and Serena Williams to earn the championship berth-struggled to find her footing.

And now, Angelique Kerber has won two of the past four majors. Victoria Azarenka, a victor of two major titles, is pregnant and taking a leave of absence.

But what made it sweeter was Kerber became the first German to become world No. 1 since Steffi Graf in 1997.

She did well and was a Top 10 player, but never at the pinnacle. From the semifinals of the Rogers Cup, Kerber went to Rio for the Olympic tennis event, where she came away with a silver medal.

“I remember all the matches were really fast”, said Kerber. It’s gonna just kill me. “And after years (when) Serena was there, I think it’s a nice change”.

But this was Kerber’s turn to show some mettle, breaking back to 3-3 and then once again to seal the victory.

Pliskova was the first player to take a set off Kerber at Flushing Meadows.

Now the German needed to beat the woman who stunned Serena in the semifinals to capture her first U.S. Open crown. “I’m not 18 so I’m always trying to improve my game”. She went on to take a 4-3 lead, using a ferocious forehand to secure the game, a shot that drew audible gasps from the jam-packed crowd. “I was just trying to take the challenge”. “Being No. 1, of course, now everybody will try to beat me and have nothing to lose”.

“It was always my dream to be number one and to win Grand Slams”, exclaimed a visibly exhilarated, but relieved, Angelique Kerber.

“Also, how I was dealing with the pressure when I came here and everybody was asking me about the number one”. And, as expected, the 12-time Grand Slam Singles champion reminded Wawrinka why he is the top ranked player in men’s tennis, as he fought back to tie the set at 3-3.

Kerber, by contrast, was used to competing on the big stage, having played two major finals already this year.

Kerber and Graf have become friends in recent years and they spent some time practising together in Las Vegas at the end of last season. Haters will try to say she only receives high recognition because of her sister’s previous accomplishments, but that put even more pressure on her to be great.
