Angelique Kerber wins the US Open, 2016 is her story

Kerber, 28, won in NY to add the US Open to her victory at the Australian Open in January, BBC reported.

Kerber recovered from a break down in the third set, pouncing on her wilting opponent with two breaks in the third set to end a compelling, high-quality battle of attrition that stretched for two hours and seven minutes.

Instead Kerber did what No1 players do.

Djokovic, the champion in 2011 and last year, had been seeking a third Grand Slam of the year and 13th major of his career.

Mary Joe Fernandez, the US Fed Cup captain, asked on Saturday, shortly before Kerber went out and played her latest remarkable match under major pressure to defeat 10th-seeded Karolina Pliskova, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, in the Open final.

Serena Williams faces a challenging new landscape in her continued pursuit of Grand Slam history thanks to the rise of a clutch fearless rivals led by new World No. 1 Angelique Kerber. She is the world No1 on merit.

Kerber, who has now added the US Open crown to the Australian Open title she claimed in January, became the first German woman to clinch the title since Steff Graffi claimed the last of her five Flushing Meadows crowns in 1996. “And now to see that the work pays off, this is actually the best feeling”. I didn’t have much easy points from the serve, because she’s just playing so well and putting every ball – even if it’s like not aggressive from her side, but still she needs to put the ball back. I’m always motivated when I’m stepping on court, but this is what I’m loving.

There is a new name on the trophy – Angelique Kerber. But she turns 35 this month and a decline is inevitable. Pliskova was No. 11 before making it past the third round of a major for the first time and becoming the fourth woman to eliminate both Williams sisters during a Grand Slam tournament.

Wawrinka is the oldest victor of the men’s tournament since 35-year-old Ken Rosewall in 1970 and the first over 30 to take the title since Pete Sampras in 2002. She also finished runners-up in Wimbledon.

Agnieszka Radwanska (POL) 5,815, 5.

“I’m ready to have this pressure on my shoulders”, Kerber said.

Britain’s Jamie Murray aimed a playful taunt at younger brother Andy after victory in the men’s doubles final alongside partner Bruno Soares handed him his second grand slam title of the year.

Injury or not, Williams surrendered her No. 1 ranking and Kerber has no intentions of giving it up. “I will still try to improve my game because I know I can still improve my serve [and] a few things in my game”. On the contrary, Pliskova was all pumped after winning the second, and stretching the title-decider to the final set. I knew that I have the game to beat the best players and just being patient and working really hard. But for the one who is attacking I would say in the end it’s more tough to do the points, especially if it’s close and you really have to push it really hard to make the victor in the end. I was maybe a little bit more exhausted in the end of the third set.

On Saturday, no longer an outsider, she gave herself a happier ending in the world’s largest tennis stadium.

“Of course, now everybody will try to beat me and have nothing to lose”, Kerber said.
