Angels’ CJ Wilson likely out for season with surgery for bone spurs

Wilson, 8-8 with a 3.89 ERA in 132 innings, told reporters Saturday he has bone spurs in his left elbow that are causing swelling and severely restricting the range of motion in his pitching arm.

He had reached the point, he said, where he no longer could pitch this season.

“There’s no gray area”, Wilson said. Wilson said this time he couldn’t continue with the pain for the rest of the season.

Three days after he was roughed up by the Houston Astros, the Los Angeles Angels placed left-hander C.J. Wilson on the DL. Wilson indicated that he will need to undergo surgery to fix, though it’s unclear if that procedure will happen immediately or after the season. “I just have to get it cleaned out, rehab and I’ll be fine again“. He had a similar surgery in 2008 and 2012 and recovered well.

“C.J. showed last year when he was banged up there is more of a sensitivity to where he is now in his career to feeling good as being able to execute pitches more consistently”, Manager Mike Scioscia said.

Weaver has been out since June 21 due to left hip irritation, however the Angels haven’t rushed his return as a result of their 5 starters have been pitching so nicely, and there was no apparent spot for Weaver to take. “We’re going to shut him down, get it evaluated and see where we are”.

“I think our rotation is still going to be intact”, Scioscia said.

“But I think the last couple starts you didn’t see the crispness”.
