Angels pitcher has brain surgery
Initial CT scans showed he suffered a small skull fracture and a hematoma.

The news was a relief to the Angels, who had been collectively holding their breath since the frightening incident in the second inning of Sunday’s game.
Angels pitcher Matt Shoemaker underwent emergency brain surgery late Sunday night in Seattle to stop bleeding after being hit in the head by a line drive.
On the more mundane topic of how the Angels will replace Shoemaker in the rotation for the rest of this season, Scioscia said they are still looking at various options.
Shoemaker posted a 3.88 ERA and 3.87 SIERA on the year, along with a 21.4 percent strikeout rate through 160 innings pitched. Los Angeles athletic trainer Adam Nevala is staying with Shoemaker until he is able to travel to Southern California, perhaps as soon as in a few days.
‘He’s resting comfortably and everything looks like it’s taken care of, ‘ Angels Manager Mike Scioscia said.
He told reporters Monday that the surgery was successful and that Shoemaker is speaking and recovering.
“The CT scan confirmed or when they actually did the operation that confirmed where the bleeding was”, Eppler said. They beat the bay area team 10-7. “They hopefully corrected what was causing the bleeding”. Shoemaker immediately went to the ground as trainers rushed to the field.
Matt Shoemaker was playing against the Seattle Mariners on Sunday when he was hit by a line drive that sent him to the hospital.
The GM has been in touch with Shoemaker’s wife, Danielle, while Nevala spoke to Shoemaker on Monday.
Those two facts, said Scioscia, “let you feel a little bit better about what could have been happening”.
The Angels have an off day on Thursday, so the next day they would need a fifth starter is a week from Tuesday, at home against the Mariners.
