Angels starting pitcher Matt Shoemaker has what the team is calling “a small skull fracture” after he was hit in the head by a vicious 105 miles per hour comebacker off the bat of Mariners third baseman Kyle Seager during the second inning of Sunday’s 4-2 win.

Angels pitcher Matt Shoemaker underwent emergency brain surgery late Sunday night in Seattle to stop bleeding after being hit in the head by a line drive.
Albert Pujols and C.J. Cron hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning and six relievers combined to shut down Seattle after Shoemaker was struck. He was initially diagnosed with a laceration, and after CT scans at a local hospital, a skull fracture and hematoma were discovered.
Angels starter Jered Weaver stayed in the game after he was hit in the back side by a line drive by Danny Valencia in the third – another scare for an Angels starter a day after Shoemaker’s incident.
Shoemaker underwent a CT scan that showed he suffered a hematoma and a small skull fracture. Considering that there are only 26 games remaining in the regular season and the Angels are the fourth worst team in the American League, it may be possible that Shoemaker might not see the mound again this season. Shoemaker went down in a heap and after some time with the trainer-was helped off the field.
Surrounded by trainers from both teams, Shoemaker was able to walk himself off the field with a towel pressed to his head to stem the bleeding. He was replaced by Deolis Guerra.
“There’s a number of candidates”, Scioscia said.
The Angels took two of three in the series, providing another damaging blow to Seattle’s fleeting postseason hopes. Weaver got the win in his last start against Cincinnati.
