Angels pitcher Matt Shoemaker suffers skull fracture after line drive off head

In case you didn’t see it Sunday, Los Angeles Angels pitcher Matt Shoemaker was drilled in the head by a line drive ripped off the bat of Seattle Mariners 3B Kyle Seager in the 2nd inning of Sunday’s game.

Angels general manager Billy Eppler called the surgery “fairly routine”, and expects Shoemaker to make a full recovery and hopes he can pitch next season.

Six relievers combined to finish out the 4-2 victory for the Angels.

Shoemaker, who never lost consciousness despite spending several moments in agony on the field, had allowed one hit with two strikeouts in 1 1/3 innings before the incident.

The ball off the bat of Kyle Seager was 105 miles per hour.

After being looked at by trainers on the field, Shoemaker was brought to the hospital and diagnosed with a fractured skull and a small hematoma.

Shoemaker had the procedure performed late Sunday by a neurologist at the University of Washington Medical Center.

Jett Bandy the Angels catcher said his view of the play was very good and when you can see how it hits someone square on the side of the head, it becomes scary. The Mariners have dropped seven of eight with AL West-leading Texas coming in for a four-game series starting Monday, likely Seattle’s last opportunity to get back into the wild-card race.

Holding a towel against his head, Shoemaker and was able to walk off the field with the help of teammates and trainers.

“You would think that we would be able to put something together against them”, Seattle manager Scott Servais said. He was replaced by Deolis Guerra. Robinson Cano hit his 31st homer off Ege in the sixth and Nelson Cruz hit his 35th in the eighth off Ramirez, both solo shots.
